Hidden characters in Word. Invisible formatting marks in Microsoft Word Problem displaying the ruble symbol in Windows

08.03.2010 04:32

In some cases, file and folder icons are displayed incorrectly due to incorrect settings, in others due to an outdated cache. Let's look at some possible solutions.

Show thumbnails instead of icons

To display thumbnails as thumbnails for video files and pictures, follow these steps:

2. On the tab View uncheck the box.

3. Click OK.

4. Open Control Panel (View: Large Icons) > System.

5. In the left menu, click Advanced System Settings.

6. On the tab Additionally In chapter Performance click the button Options.

7. In the window that opens, on the tab Visual effects check the box.

8. Click OK.

Resetting the icon cache

When a user opens a folder, Windows 7 caches the icons of all files, folders, and shortcuts stored in it (to increase speed). Sometimes, when icons and folder contents are changed, the cache does not have time to reset and the appearance of the icons does not change even after pressing the F5 button. In such cases, you can manually reset the cache:

2. On the tab View In chapter Hidden files and folders install Show hidden files, folders and drives.

3. Click OK.

4. Paste the address into the address bar of Windows 7 Explorer:

%userprofile%\AppData\Local

and press Enter.

5. In the folder that opens, delete the hidden file.

6. Restart your computer.

After rebooting, Windows 7 will rebuild the cache and create a new IconCache.db file, after which the icons will be displayed correctly.

Note. The cache needs to be rebuilt separately for each account.

→ Why are some characters not displayed for me?

Why are some characters not showing up for me?

Why are some symbols not displayed for me, squares, questions are displayed, or nothing is displayed at all? Unfortunately, the font you are using on your system does not support this symbol. We will try to explain in more detail below.

Encodings and fonts

Encoding is the correspondence between the number in the computer memory and the displayed character. Here, for example, is the symbol. We see the letter A on the screen, and the computer sees the number 1040. The number 1040 tells the computer to draw the letter A, but it doesn't say how: bold, italic, curlicue, what size. The style is not a matter of encoding, it is a matter of the font.

From a computer's point of view, a font is a file in which pictures are associated with certain numbers (code positions). That is, the number 1040 is associated with an image of the letter A. Only one image of the letter A. If we want a cursive letter A, we need to use a different font with cursive letters. Serif or sans serif? This again requires different fonts. That is, if we use the Arial-italic font to display text, the computer, encountering the number 1040, turns to the font, receives an image from it (italic capital letter A without serifs) and displays it.

Availability of characters in fonts

By and large, what characters to draw to correspond to each number is up to the font developer. Instead of the letter “A,” he can draw the letter “B” or even something indecent. And the computer will display it on the screen without blinking an eye. However, fonts that are used on computers and on the Internet are usually made by sane people and they comply with standards. That is, the letter “B” most likely will not appear instead of the letter “A”.

Another thing is whether there are pictures for all the letters in the font. The Unicode standard already defines more than one hundred thousand characters. Among them there are a lot of exotic ones, such as Egyptian hieroglyphs or ancient Babylonian cuneiform. Drawing each hieroglyph is, on the one hand, too tedious; on the other hand, a file of such a font will weigh tens of megabytes, which is too expensive for use on the Internet. Therefore, usually only a limited number of characters are drawn in a font - Latin letters, numbers, basic punctuation marks. For Russian fonts there is also Cyrillic. For Arabic - Arabic letters, but there may no longer be a Cyrillic alphabet.

Therefore, the answer to the question “why the symbol is not shown when copying” is that different fonts are used on the page from which you copied and on the one to which you copied. And if in the first font this symbol is drawn, then in the second its developers were lazy.

Symbols on our website

The goal of our site is to show all Unicode characters. Therefore, we use fonts where most of these characters are rendered. And we are constantly working to draw the missing ones. Therefore, we have a cat’s face and many other interesting things. But this may not be the case in other fonts on other sites.

You can go to the symbol page and see how it looks in standard fonts such as Arial, Times New Roman and others. If the symbol does not turn into a square, then most likely it will be displayed correctly on other sites.

The problem is that even standard fonts such as Arial can contain different numbers of characters on different operating systems.

Another problem: the cute face of a cat in a different font may not be so cute.

Programs that do not support full Unicode

All modern browsers support the latest Unicode standard (more than 100 thousand characters). But some others (various instant messengers like ICQ) may not support all characters (usually only the first 65 thousand). Since the cat's face does not fall into this limit (its code is 128 049), they will not be able to display it normally.

Ways to solve the problem

If the symbol you like is not displayed on some site, then this problem is not so easy to solve. You can set yourself a more complete font, but then you will see this symbol, but your readers still won’t. You can contact the site administration to have them install a new font.

The most radical, but working option is, if possible, to insert not a symbol, but a picture with it.

Formatting marks, such as periods (...) for spaces or arrows (→) for tabs, are used in Word to display document layout. They can be useful when you want to achieve a certain appearance for your content.

Note: Publisher also has some formatting marks.

What are formatting marks?

Formatting marks are a set of characters that are used to visually represent the formatting of a document.

Tab characters
Tab characters appear as arrows.

Spaces
Spaces between words are displayed as dots.

Paragraph marks
The end of a paragraph is indicated by a special character.

Hidden text
Hidden text is underlined with a dotted line.

Soft transfers
Hyphens indicating where words will wrap to another line. Soft hyphens are not output if the word is not hyphenated. If a word is moved to another line, the soft hyphen appears as a normal hyphen.

Object Bindings
Anchors indicate that an object is attached to a specific paragraph.

Breaks
Breaks determine where a word or phrase will wrap if it does not fit on the line. If you work with text in East Asian languages in Word, this option prevents text from wrapping incorrectly. It is only available if text editing is enabled for East Asian languages.

Show or hide formatting marks in a document

Button Show or hide is a toggle that allows you to show or hide formatting marks.

Note: If the button Show or hide is on, its background is dimmed.

Turn on formatting marks

You can choose which formatting marks are always visible even when display is turned off using the button Show or hide. For example, you can make paragraph marks and spaces appear always, but tabs and hidden text can be controlled using a button Show or hide.

Note: If the button Show or hide is on, its background is dimmed.

Disable formatting marks

Disable wavy underline in Word

Red wavy lines in Word indicate possible spelling and grammatical errors. Blue squiggly lines indicate words that may be incorrect in their context - "pear" shoes and "pair" shoes, or "not".

Hello dear visitors. Today I came across a not very pleasant problem and decided to share the solution with you. I’ll tell you what to do if shortcut icons no longer appear on the desktop and in folders in the Windows 7 operating system. I usually store on the desktop only shortcuts for programs that I use very often; fortunately, there are not very many of them. I keep all other shortcuts in a folder on my desktop.

Today I go to this folder, and there, instead of beautiful program icons (icons), standard icons are displayed and they are all the same. Like this:

But on the desktop, all shortcuts were displayed normally. For you it may be the other way around. I immediately checked whether the programs whose shortcuts had lost their beautiful appearance were working. The programs started, which means you need to clear the cache of shortcut icons.

It helped me, I think the method I will write about below will also help you.

Shortcut icons no longer appear?

We will need to run several commands, for this we need to launch the command line. Let's go to the launch, then "All programs", “Standard” and launch the utility. Better right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.

A window will open in which we enter the commands one by one. Enter one command and press “Enter”. For convenience, you can copy the commands and paste them into the command line.

1 . Close the process explorer with the command taskkill /im explorer.exe /f

2 .cd %userprofile%\appdata\local

3 . attrib -h IconCache.db

The problem is this: for a user on Windows in the Google Chrome browser, the Russian ruble sign was not displayed, but instead a square. To solve this problem, first of all, you need to determine what exactly the problem is in the browser or in the system. To eliminate problems in the Windows system, you should go through any browser (Windows Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Yandex.Browser, Safari, Microsoft Edge) to this page or to any page that displays the Russian ruble and make sure that this currency is displayed correctly or not symbol.

Visit this page from different browsers: shown below Russian ruble sign, otherwise it will be displayed square.

If the symbol is also not displayed in other browsers, then the problem is in Windows and the Google Chrome browser is functioning properly and a similar problem will be observed in any browser. In this case, we use the Windows update solution. If in an alternative browser the ruble symbol is displayed correctly, then the problem lies in Google Chrome and in this case, we solve the problem by re-creating the user profile in the browser.

Problem displaying the ruble symbol in Windows

1. Let's go to the Microsoft website to the page with .

2. On the company’s website in the second part of the material, links to updates will be provided depending on the system. Download them, according to the instructions on the site.

class="eliadunit">

3. When the installation is complete, the updater will prompt reboot, which is worth doing. When the system is turned off and on, the Windows system will be updated. Next, we return to this article and check the display of the ruble.

The ruble sign is not displayed in Google Chrome.

1. When closed Google Chrome go to the browser Internet Explorer and enter in the address bar:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\

2. We should be transferred to the settings storage folder Chrome, it needs to be renamed (for example to “ =Default=") or move the folder to another location Default.

3. Open Google Chrome and visit this site again to check that the ruble sign is displayed correctly.

4. The problem should be resolved, but some elements of the old Google Chrome profile may be very important. Bookmark file recommended Bookmarks.bak from old folder =Default= to the newly created folder Default move and rename (deleting the same name) to Bookmarks(without permission). It is also recommended to move the folder Login Data.

It is worth warning about the fundamental disadvantage of this update: after installing it, the right ALT on the keyboard stops working. But this can be solved; to resolve this issue, it’s worth using.
